police department has been struggling with the problem. burglaries going up, and fewer officers to respond. we are going to show you pictures that helped catch the burglars. san jose police officers make six arrests. these are pictures from a citizens of burglars breaking into a home through a backdoor today in san jose. we are not showing faces because the suspects are juveniles but in the pictures they are smiling, while carrying merchandise into the vehicle. >> we see cash taken, ipad, computers, apple devices, electronics, tvs. >> reporter: officers believe they burglarized two homes in the past two days. but a neighborhood captured the vehicle that led arrests. >> third suspect was taken into

custody here and a fourth after a foot pursuit. >> reporter: san jose police arrested two more people. police say in this case a picture taken by a citizen also led to the arrest. officers home this leads to more public cooperation. >> if you see something, call us. let us know of suspicious activity. >> it has been a challenge. the rise in burglaries has been well documented. but the patrol officers take it very seriously. it is almost as if it is personal to them. >> reporter: it may take more than these arrests to reverse the trend but it is a good start and investigators are checking to see if the suspects are connected to other cases. rob effort h -- robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police are investigating two hop sides that occur -- homicides that

occurred last night. one before 8:30 p.m. officers found a male victim unconscious and not breathing. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. it appears he was involved in a fight. another man was killed in a gang related shooting in east san jose, that happened this morning. investigators say the victim was standing outside with friends when a stranger approached the group and opened fire. the death marks the 36th killing so far this year. >> last night he announced he is resigning from the san jose police officer's association. he was a member of the association for 20 years. he told ktvu he made the decision monday night when he heard a union member admit they endorse people who are not honest with voters about their

political petitions. a big day, the new archbishop was installed today. ktvu's mike mibach is live with the controversy that is surrounding the new archbishop. mike? >> reporter: the mass lasted more than 2 hours and was attended by liberal and conservative catholics. [ singing ] the final prayer in the beginning of the new chapter. >> a blessing for the church. salvatore cordileone is now the 9th archbishop of san francisco. the mass was invitation only and attended by thousands. >> very sacred. >> beautiful. i am excited about him being our archbishop. the archbishop's appointment doesn't come without controversy. the question is, will he reach out? salvatore cordileone has a reputation as a strong defender

of home sexuality. >> this is triggering anxiety. >> reporter: he says the appointment of salvatore cordileone to san francisco could signal pope benedict xvi is interested in a smaller purer church. >> maybe the church is signaling not so much interest in holding on to people that are already struggling with the teachings but a willingness to let them go. >> reporter: catholics say they believe the archbishop will reach out to liberal catholics who welcome the gay community. >> i know that is probably on his list. >> reporter: the new archbishop did not address the media but he said he looks forward to reaching out to all 91 perishes. home to liberal and conservative catholics. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2

news. >> san francisco's new archbishop was met with a mixed reaction today. while the installation was going on inside, 2 dozen protesters gathered outside. many gay right supporters upset salvatore cordileone is a vocal supporter of prop 8, the ban on same-sex marriage. >> people listen to him. we are here to convince them to listen to us. >> standing next to the protesters were an equal number of supporters. california is one of five states that ignored a 2006 law requiring it to track sex offenders. 3 dozen states failed to join

$4.43. in oakland $4.34. and san jose $4.37 a gallon. >> good news is these events are short lived. temporary in nature. once they come back -- up from their outage, it will take a number of days, that will improve supplies. >> it is expected gas prices will come back down by early next week. >> analysts say spending was strong in september and that is an encouraging sign for retailers as they prepare for the holidays, which is the busiest shopping period of the year. fixed mortgages fell, suggesting the stimulus efforts are having an impact and the unemployment benefits rose to

good friend. ktvu's ann rubin talked to people who knew the men. >> reporter: neighbors never believed it would come to this. the suspect is being held where he declined our request for an interview. investigators are trying to understand what sparked the shooting. >> reporter: a cross. one for each victim. >> they were great, great friends. >> reporter: police believe it was a third friend, a man who lived across the street was responsible for gunning them down. they arrested him, a marine and vietnam veteran. >> he is strong willed. he is an ex-marine but the nicest guy. >> reporter: friends are in shock.

saying they were close. >> they were over there. >> reporter: neighbors said the friends fought and they say he did carry a gun sometimes. >> getting angry about politics. >> reporter: still no one viewed him as a threat. >> he blew it off. >> family asked me to make a statement and tell everybody just, you know, he was loved and it is a tragedy. >> reporter: friends of the victim say both were fathers and husbands. >> they seemed to be friends. something triggered. i am not sure. we have no details yet. >> reporter: the shooting happened at 6:09 p.m. after the start of the presidential debate. no word on whether politics or something else triggered the incident last night. ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news.

some of oakland's community leaders say it is time the governor declares state of emergency to address the rising violence in oakland. the police chief joined leaders to outline plans to try to reduce violence after five people were killed in a 18 hour period earlier this week. he says the department is working with the atf on a gun violence plan and he plans to work with religious leaders. but some say the city needs more help. >> oakland is a war zone. in certain parts is a war ezone. we -- war zone. >> the five killings this week bring the total number of killings in oakland this year to 94. an independent review found problems with how police handled a occupy protest a year ago. it turned violent with one

person being seriously injured. they agreed with a report that found the police department's response troubling. authorities released more details on a officer involved shooting at a cal train station in san jose. a deputy opened fire on a man who was on the tracks. authorities say the man threw an object at the deputy striking him. the suspect then threw more objects at employees, that is when the deputy opened fire. the man has non-life threatening injuries. police are turning up the heat on two men who robbed a chase bank. investigators released photos taken yesterday. they show the suspects inside the bank. officers say the men were last seen running north bound from the bank. if you have information you are asked to call the police
